An inspiring puzzle book for children 8+
It has taken over seven years to produce this book with many rewrites and questions. Some puzzles I have had to change (as my children got older its no longer puzzling enough for them). But the original idea was my son’s project. I encouraged him to write a book (to improve his writing) and he chose the one thing he knew he was good at; discovering Maths and Science puzzles. This won an NAGC award presented by the city of London Mayor in 2011. Its been an education for me to be involved in this project. The original idea has been updated with totally new puzzling ideas for children to question and puzzle over. Its an educational quest and a challenge for children 8+
Laser cut wooden puzzles (from the book)
These are EIGHT all made from exactly the same puzzles
you will see in our puzzlebook. The difference is that we
have made them using Lasers to cut out wooden
templates. They are then coloured-in for finished (by the
children). They do not need to have read the book to
totally understand the puzzle. The puzzle is to re-arrange
the pieces. First they make a new shape (then try to
replace the pieces back into the original order from
memory). Age 8+ and even grown are challenged.
I have decided to offer these as ‘unfinished’ puzzles as they can be easily coloured-in (with children’s watercolour or wax crayons) and then finished with some clear wax polish. That is how we made ours, and they make ideal presents. See our GALLERY pages for all eight puzzles in the series…!
About the author:
The author currently teaches IT at primary school level up to secondary stage. Before that I was a frequent volunteer on all things ‘educational’ in schools. I joined a parent led educational activity group (NAGC) and discovered that there are many educational support groups to encourage a children’s educational ability - in and outside school. I have since been involved in educational projects for over 16 years and have worked for several schools, FE Colleges, school activity clubs (for young and old) in educational puzzle talks. Before that I worked as a Graphical Artist in publishing, technical illustration (mainly for books, newspapers and magazine production). Before that I studied and qualified in Electronics Engineering where I became interested in Computer graphics. My son inspired this book with his puzzling questions and I have since followed that line of thought in this updated book.

Over 75 unique and challenging puzzles for children to explore. Some of them are easy and some (most) are not easy at all. Each and every puzzle has been designed to be amusements for children, but there is an educational value to each. After some evaluation with children in our educational groups, we discovered that most children need to have access to questions and answers. We don’t hide the answers away on the back page. Not all children learn at the same rate and having the answers ‘to hand’ (when stuck) means they can solve problems with a bit of help. The puzzles are not designed to be easy to understand by those under 8. Most children will still be puzzling over this book as teenagers. That is the idea to inspire, inform and make a puzzle out of it.
